HAL Secures Major Engine Licensing and Export Contracts

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) announced significant progress on August 1 with two major international collaborations: a licensing agreement with GE Aviation for manufacturing LCA MK2 engines in India, and a new export deal with French giant Safran for the supply of ring forgings used in LEAP engines. These moves are poised to catalyze domestic aerospace manufacturing, embed critical technology transfer, and deepen India’s role in global supply chains.

The GE agreement will see LCA MK2 engines produced in Indian facilities, boosting local value-add and fortifying technology capabilities in indigenous defense production. The Safran export contract underscores India’s growing prowess as a supplier of precision components for the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers. HAL’s momentum dovetails with the government’s Make in India platform and is expected to boost employment, technical upskilling, and long-term export returns.

Industry leaders view these partnerships as a blueprint for public-private cooperation in advanced manufacturing, encouraging greater R&D and FDI inflows into high-tech sectors. With increased global uncertainty and shifting geopolitical alliances, India’s defense and aerospace ecosystem stands to gain strategic clout and commercial scale from such foundational agreements.
